For the first time since its launch in 2022, Vogue Philippines translated its June/July 2026 issue into Filipino in celebration of the country’s Independence Day.
Celebrating the 128th anniversary of the country’s independence, Vogue Philippines has, for the first time since its inception in 2022, translated its June/July 2026 issue into Filipino. The move goes beyond print, carrying over to the publication’s digital platforms where stories from the issue are accompanied by captions written in both English and Filipino across social media.
Bea Valdes, the former editor-in-chief of Vogue Philippines and now the Chief Content Officer of Mega Global Group Inc., shares that the idea first came from the publication’s publisher and owner, Archie Carrasco.”Right after speaking to him, I brought the suggestion to the team. Our managing editor, Jacs Sampayan, immediately said yes without hesitation and volunteered to do the translations.”
If Valdes reflects on where the idea began, Trickie Lopa, the editor-in-chief of Vogue Philippines, points to why now was the right moment to pursue it. After years of dedicating the publication to showcasing Filipino creative talents to the world, she mentions that the team had done almost everything except one thing: fully embrace the use of the national language.”The people we highlight are proud of how they established themselves, and in the same way, we are also proud of who they are.”
To take things a step further, Lopa emphasizes that using the Filipino language is not only fitting for the celebration of Independence Day, but also for the individuals featured in this month’s issue, including Ponce Veridiano, Wynn Wynn Ong, and Jonathan Matti. But despite taking pride in this first step, she also acknowledges the extra effort required to make it happen. “Our managing editor had sleepless nights trying to preserve how we express ourselves in Filipino. We know we are taking a risk. But for me, the most important part is that we have the courage to do this,” she laughs. “No one else has ever done this before, and we’re putting ourselves out there.”
It was in the same context that Valdes recalls one of the final moments of her tenure as editor-in-chief. “Hearing Jacs, during our last closing, read the translated passage of Mattia Holm’s movement, it somehow felt so lyrical, in a language that had become unfamiliar to us as writers in English. It was truly a moment I will never forget. To hear his voice in our own language rounded out, so poetically, what this journey has been like.”
As Vogue Philippines embarks on a new chapter in 2026 under new editorial leadership, anticipation continues to build as the publication also prepares to celebrate its fourth anniversary this September.
