Dua Lipa, Michaela Coel, Penélope Cruz, and Roger Federer are the co-chairs of this year’s event with Vogue’s Anna Wintour.
Red carpet arrivals at the 2023 Met Gala are underway, and everyone is looking to the gala’s co-chairs to set the mood for one of fashion’s most beloved nights of the year. This year celebrates the Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute’s latest exhibition, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” It pays homage to the life and work of the prolific fashion designer, whose vision has helmed major fashion houses, including Chanel, Fendi, and Chloé.
Announced in January of this year are the four co-chairs joining Vogue’s Anna Wintour in hosting this year’s event: Dua Lipa, Michaela Coel, Penélope Cruz, and Roger Federer. The four have been selected to represent different areas of popular culture, from music, film, sports, and fashion. See what the co-chairs are wearing on the Met’s colorful carpet below.
Dua Lipa in Vintage Chanel
Three-time Grammy winner Dua Lipa was announced as co-chair shortly after wrapping up her Future Nostalgia tour. The singer arrived in an archival piece: a white and black tweed ballgown by Chanel, an haute couture dress designed by Karl Lagerfeld for the Fall/Winter 1992 season. That year, the dress was worn by Claudia Schiffer on the runway. Around her neck is Tiffany & Co.’s Legendary diamond set on their Lucida Star necklace. The white diamond is over 100 carats and shaped in a cushion cut similar to the brand’s iconic yellow Tiffany diamond.
Michaela Coel in Schiaparelli
Michaela Coel’s career skyrocketed thanks to successful runs in the series I May Destroy You and the movie Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The actress arrived in a heavily stoned dress inspired by Chanel’s signature costume jewelry. The look was rounded up with matching large teardrop earrings and gold pumps. In her Met carpet interview, Coel said the dress was a collaboration between Coel’s stylist and Schiaparelli’s artistic director Daniel Roseberry and took over 3,800 hours to create.
Penélope Cruz in Vintage Chanel
It’s no surprise that Penélope Cruz was tapped as one of this year’s co-chairs, given the theme. Often referred to as one of Lagerfeld’s muses, Cruz arrived in a vintage Chanel haute couture bridal gown from the Chanel Spring/Summer 1988 collection. According to Cruz, it took her months to study every look Lagerfeld had done for Chanel to select her look for the night, but she kept coming back to this dress.
Roger Federer in Dior Men
Known for his off-court style as much as for his on-court excellence, retired professional tennis player Roger Federer rounds up this year’s roster of Met Gala co-chairs to support his friend, Anna Wintour. Federer arrived in a classic tuxedo by Dior Men, accessorized with sunglasses and a Rolex watch.
