From Kim Kardashian to Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, see the best vintage looks at the Met Gala to date.
Vintage on the red carpet might be all the rage these days, but an archival sighting at the Met Gala was actually relatively rare until fairly recently. For a long time, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were the most consistent champions of vintage on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, wearing pieces from the Chanel, Dior, Givenchy and Paco Rabanne archives over the years.
Happily, vintage has become increasingly popular on the First Monday of May—with Kim Kardashian having a major archival moment last year in the glittering gown that Marilyn Monroe wore when she sang “Happy Birthday, Mr President” to John F Kennedy in 1962.
Given that the Met Gala theme for 2023 is Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, there’s likely to be a whole host of vintage looks on this year’s red carpet in tribute to the late designer. Until then, take a look back at the best archival dresses at the Met Gala to date.
