Keeping tabs on the scoreboard, it’s another point for the indie girls, although this time, perhaps with a bit of reservation, as Beatrice Kristi Ilejay Laus, popularly known as beabadoobee, is taking her music in a new direction with her newly released album, Pylon.
The Iloilo-born artist made it big back in 2017 during the initial indie buzz when she uploaded “Coffee,” the very first song she had written, on Spotify. While everyone was stuck on their screens a few years later during the pandemic, the same song was sampled for a lo-fi hip-hop track titled “Death Bed (Coffee for Your Head),” which became a massive global hit with over four billion plays on TikTok. Now, beabadoobee returns with her 14-track fourth studio album, which leans into grungy alternative rock.
From the soft-spoken, bedroom-recorded tracks that first got her the numbers, Pylon is released under Dirty Hit and Interscope Records as the follow-up to her UK number one record, This Is How Tomorrow Moves, marking her transition into heavy grunge and Midwest emo.
“I had to write these songs on tour or between tours because I had to understand what was going on in my head. It’s this idea of letting go and accepting change. When I was on tour, I was yearning for something, and it made me think: How do I make myself feel comfortable? What does it mean to grow up? I was just missing how things were,” she said in a statement.
The album includes the singles “Memories,” “Switchblade,” and “Sun Has Set,” which the artist wrote while recalling her teenage self, who spent a lot of time writing songs alone in a hotel room. Pylon also features contributions from Hayley Williams, Turnstile singer Brendan Yates, Pinegrove’s Evan Stephens Hall, Deftones’ Chino Moreno, and Title Fight’s Shane Moran.
After her string of intimate release shows in London, the indie-turned-alt-rock artist is set to return to North America on October 1 to kick off the Powerlines Tour, her first-ever arena run, with shows across the continent.
