For his fourth collaboration with Samsung, the American designer translates his signature style into tech once more at a pre-launch event in Manila
A glance at Thom Browne’s Resort 2024 Menswear collection brings to mind his trademark detailing and tailoring. Surrounded by a myriad of gray and varicolored horsehair-infused tweed outfits, the runway gradually transforms into a canvas of black.
Paying tribute to the striking affiliations with the color black, the Galaxy Z Fold5 Thom Browne Edition epitomizes the distinctive style of the American designer and his progressive leaning towards fashion that is gender-neutral. A partnership that dates back to 2020, Samsung and the fashion house have allowed a fusion of technology and style to come to the fore. The first collaboration highlighted its emblematic pebble gray theme, which was followed by a collection themed around the old and new uniforms of the Olympics.
At the unveiling of the Galaxy Z Fold5 Thom Browne Edition at Palacio de Memoria in Manila, Samsung partnered with Vogue Philippines for a black-tie affair inviting guests to “Take a seat at the Thom Browne table.” The pre-launch event was headed by Rhoda Campos-Aldanese, Mega Global Licensing Inc.’s chief operating officer and Blue Avelino, head of product marketing for mobile experience at Samsung Philippines. This included a private dinner with brand representatives like Miss Universe 2023 Philippines Michelle Dee, Dr. Hayden Kho, and photographer Patrick Diokno.
“The Galaxy Z series is not just about folding screens,” says Avelino. “It’s about reimagining how we interact with our devices.” The Samsung head also adds that the newer generation of foldable smartphones and watches has become a form of self-expression and seamlessly integrating technology into our lives.
In the midst of the black-tie event, Samsung brand ambassador Michelle Dee proclaimed her affinity for the collection’s color scheme. “Black is definitely my color. It’s also my favorite,” shares Dee. The profound connotation of black, as she explains, is its embodiment of all colors, echoing her advocacy for inclusivity. The version presented by Samsung and Thom Browne aligns with the beauty queen’s edgy and mysterious character, “Black just resonates with me.”
True to Browne’s love of theatrics, the journey of the Galaxy Z Fold5 collaboration begins with the packaging, a matte black box that unfolds like a briefcase revealing their flagship foldable phone and the Galaxy Watch6. The Z Fold5 exterior features design elements that contain Thom Browne’s signature red, white, and blue stripes; fabric texture etched on the rear of the foldable Samsung smartphone, a black frame that reveals a gold hinge when folded; and gold rings around the camera lenses. The Galaxy Watch6 presents a gold-tone body with the fashion house’s logo engraved on the side and their grosgrain signature on the buckle.
In the box is an array of accessories to complement the two-piece collection: two black pebble leather pouches for the smartphone, a special edition of the S Pen, two Galaxy Watch6 straps in black pebble leather and red, white, and blue striped leather. The American designer’s signature colors are also present in the 25W travel adapter, coin-style watch charger, and an exclusive fabric USB-C to USB-C cable.
