Olivia Rodrigo is back with her latest single, “drop dead,” as she gears up for the release of her third album you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, which is set to drop on June 12, 2026.

Having the title of being one of the new generation’s biggest pop stars isn’t just a claim made by the fans of Olivia Rodrigo, especially not after her Guts World Tour became the highest-grossing tour by an artist born in the 21st century. Today, the pop star is back in the spotlight with the release of her new single, “drop dead,” from her upcoming third album.

During Easter week, Rodrigo announced her upcoming third album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, which is set to be released on June 12, 2026. One of the singles from the album, “drop dead,” was released today, April 17, 2026.

In an interview with British Vogue, she revealed that the themes of her upcoming album center on sad love songs. “It was a creative challenge to write from a joyful place,” she explained. “When you’re connected to someone or feeling really good, you’re not in your head thinking about bittersweet poems!” She recorded the album with producer Dan Nigro, who also worked with her on her first two albums, Sour and Guts.

Alongside the album’s themes, the music video for “drop dead” sees Rodrigo once again collaborating with Canadian artist Petra Collins, the director she’s worked with most since “good 4 u,” continuing a creative partnership that has come to define her visual world. The single’s cover, meanwhile, was shot by Adrian Martin, a Filipino photographer based in Los Angeles.

Rodrigo experienced her first breakthrough in music with the release of her single “drivers license” in January 2021, when she was just 17 years old. The song broke Spotify’s record twice for the most daily streams ever for a non-holiday track and became the first to reach 80 million streams within seven days.

Performing as a pop star, Rodrigo has the same “I made it ” moment as other artists when they’re on stage and looking at the crowd. “It just makes you feel less alone. I think that’s what art is for: to make us all remember that we’re interconnected.”

This occurred during her visit to the Philippines for the Guts World Tour in 2024, where she broke not only records but also the internet by proudly showcasing her Filipino blood with a “Miss So Filipina” sash and a “Pinoy Pride” statement tee. It was a unique sold-out show, with tickets priced at a flat rate of PHP 1,500 for all seats, and all net proceeds donated to her Fund 4 Good charity benefiting women and girls.

UMG Philippines is now looking forward to reconnecting with the same Filipino fans who filled the Philippine Arena by hosting a karaoke party on April 18, 2026, just one day after the song’s release. The event will take place at a secret location, and tickets will only be available through invitations.

Releasing her new single five years after “drivers license,” where she emotionally connected with her listeners, “drop dead” is an appetizer for the upcoming album. In this song, she explores the theme of “premonitions in her relationship,” which she calls “feminine intuition.” She doesn’t specify who the song is about, but she did previously tease, “The person that the song is about is great.”
