Everything That Happened at Miss Universe 2024

Victoria Kjær Theilvig wins the first Miss Universe crown for Denmark, bringing ‘good pressure’ to her country.

For the first time in her country’s pageant history, Miss Denmark Victoria Kjær Theilvig is crowned Miss Universe 2024 at the Arena CDMX in Mexico City on November 16.

The 21-year-old triumphed over 100 candidates across the globe, wearing a fringed trumpet evening gown. She succeeded Sheynnis Alondra Cornejo from Nicaragua.

“This is a good pressure on Denmark as the world will now be watching closely to see who will be the next woman from this country to shine on the international stage,” communication coach Michelle Padayhag told Vogue Philippines after the competition.

Thus, her victory could also inspire other countries to be consistent in their goals. She continued, saying: “This is also a breath of fresh air coming from a country that has not won any Miss Universe title. This gives hope to other women that regardless of where they come from, as long as they are prepared and have a purpose, they can truly win.”

Padayhag has trained five other Miss Universe candidates this year, representing Italy, Sri Lanka, Estonia, and Cyprus, including Bolivia, who finished her journey in the Top 12.

According to Padayhag, Theilvig won the hearts of both the audience and judges during the final Q and A. When asked to give a message to a generation of women who have been inspired by Miss Universe during the final Q and A portion, she reminded them to “keep fighting” and to refuse to be defined by past mistakes. She also shared that her purpose for joining the pageant was “to make history.”

“It was a winning moment because it showed her humility,” Padayahag recalled. “Denmark emphasized the importance of accepting mistakes, learning from them, and turning them into strengths.”

Meanwhile, aside from their excellent performance throughout the night, it was a fashion moment for the rest of the winners during the evening competition. Miss Nigeria Chidimma Adetshina (first runner-up) wore a nude evening dress with a floor-sweeping cape by Maryam Elisha while Miss Mexico Maria Fernanda Figueroa (second runner-up) looked ethereal in cascades of ruffles.

Filipino fashion designer Rian Fernandez crafted a fully beaded off-the-shoulder gown inspired by the elegance of a swan for Miss Thailand Opal Suchata (third runner-up). Miss Venezuela Ileana Marquez Pedroza (fourth runner-up), on the other hand, wore a sleek gown with architectural shoulder pads by Nidal Nouaihed.

Furthermore, Miss Philippines Chelsea Manalo and three more Filipino candidates who represented other countries like Miss New Zealand Victoria Velasquez Vincent, Miss Great Britain Christina Chalk, and Miss Bahrain Shereen Ahmed did not advance to the final round.

Musical guests Taboo of the Black Eyed Peas, American pop singer Robin Thicke, and Chilean singer Nico Ruiz also performed during the coronation night.
