Everyone knows Bagasáo for its structured denim garments. With crisp silhouettes and sharp lines, the brand is a minimalist homage to slow fashion. Collection 5.5, the label’s newest rendition, is a transition capsule collection merging the studio’s past and future. A thoughtful homage to those who’ve supported the label, designer Joseph Bagasao notes in the brand’s official statement, “This collection is significant not only to my own [and the studio’s] journey, but also to the people who believed in us since day one.”

With emotion and craftsmanship as the main drivers of the impeccably-constructed collection, the designer also references a street photograph of a flower by Hong Kong-based photographer Bhisan Rai in a sentimental editorial taken at the atelier. As the brand looks to the future, more elements will be added to each garment, including the clothes’ “V” stitching, a way for the designer to honor his father. It previews the visual mainstay of Bagasáo’s succeeding collections.

With a color palette of subdued browns, creams, and dark blues, the Filipino-made brand surprises with a timeless selection of eight looks exploring the nuances of classic style elements and contemporary dress-making techniques. Bagasao even reinterprets his previous designs for the modern day, highlighting the intelligent seam placements, cuffs, and slits the brand is known for, likely a product of his training as the embroidery designer for New York-based women’s label Natori.

In Oasis, the brand’s previous Spring/Summer 2022 collection, the Fashion Institute of the Philippines alum created a sensory escape to sunnier days, referencing the ebullient Marrakech markets, dreamy country homes, pristine seascapes, and the distinguished women captured in Slim Aarons’ photographs. Form-fitting structured pieces cinched at the waist to belts intermingled with draped silhouettes, oversized button-ups, and distinct prints, Oasis showcased Bagasáo’s skill in constructing distinct shapes via a covetable, vacation-ready line that instantly transports you to a picturesque summer getaway.

In Collection 5.5, earthy hues, feminine styles (again cinched at the waist), and concise tailoring remain a mainstay throughout the label’s garments. However, oversized pockets, color-blocking, fringed characteristics, and a play on symmetry breathe new life into the brand.

From fringed denim jackets that could be your next Fall staple to tri-toned dresses with loose silhouettes and patchwork details perfect for warm weather, the brand’s newest collection is one to shop. By shedding light on the label’s familiar shapes and materials, Collection 5.5 is a nod to the elements that encompass the brand’s identity, while simultaneously looking ahead. In the press statement, the designer says, “To better understand where we are going, I ought to recall what brought us to where we are at this moment.”
