Lana Del Rey’s 2024 Met Gala Look References an Iconic Alexander McQueen Collection

Fresh off headlining the Coachella music festival last month, Lana Del Rey made a triumphant return to the Met Gala this evening—marking her first time attending since 2018. And, as usual, the singer brought forward an ethereal and dark-but-romantic fashion look for the affair: She commanded the famed Met steps in a custom design by Alexander McQueen’s Seán McGirr.

Del Rey’s striking look referenced an archival Alexander McQueen look from its fall 2006 collection; McGirr wanted to celebrate the savoir-faire of the atelier in a new, contemporary way. It resulted in a corseted dress in silk, double georgette, and tulle—all hand-embroidered with hammered bronze-bullion hawthorn branches, inspired by the patina and form of sculptures made by the Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti. For a dramatic finish, McGirr created a special headpiece for Del Rey, using natural hawthorn branches and draping them with a veil of sheer tulle. Del Rey also wore a bronze metal Drop bag embellished with a clock detail.

This evening marks Del Rey’s third time attending the Met Gala. In 2018, for the “Heavenly Bodies” theme, the singer delivered one of the night’s best fashion moments in a custom Gucci look, hitting the carpet alongside Jaret Leto. The design featured a cream dress with gold accents, including a sacred heart chest plate (pierced with tiny daggers) and an ombré blue headpiece with wings. Back in 2012, Del Rey arrived to the gala wearing a sleek Altuzarra look; Her metallic silver gown, complete with a sweetheart neckline, came with a dramatic black cape. Tonight, in her nature-focused look, the singer has wowed us once again.
