Through Her Kusog Head Wraps, Celine Cornejo Finds Strength in Her Breast Cancer Journey

Kusog means strength in Waray, reflecting what the entrepreneur wants her designs to represent: “Wear Your Strength.”

Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. For Celine Cornejo, losing her hair to chemotherapy while battling cancer also became the beginning of something that gave her strength and a new sense of purpose.

She founded Kusog, a brand that specializes in comfortable, pre-tied turbans. In Waray, kusog means strength, a word that came to mind because it connects with her roots in Tacloban and encapsulates what she wants every head wrap to represent: “Wear Your Strength.”

Celine has always loved dressing up, and even during her treatment, looking put together became one of the little things that made her feel good. During this time, she realized that while a head wrap may be just a piece of clothing, it could represent something more than covering hair loss. It could be part of your style and a way to feel confident again.

“What started as something I personally needed became something I wanted to share with other women going through cancer and hair loss. Eventually, Kusog became more than just head wraps,” she says. “It became an advocacy and community, a way of reminding people that even during one of the hardest seasons of their lives, they can still feel beautiful, seen, supported, and strong,” she says.

Conversations with fellow cancer patients and survivors inspired Celine to design the pieces, but her own experience with chemotherapy pushed her to pursue them. She shares that she knows firsthand how sensitive a scalp can become, how tiring it can be to get ready, and how something as simple as choosing what to wear can affect how you feel about yourself. So she made sure comfort and style always come together; the head wraps should be soft, secure, and easy to wear.

“Every journey is different, but I realized that many of us want the same things: comfort, ease, and the chance to still feel like ourselves. That really shaped how I approached the head wraps. I wanted them to be comfortable, easy to wear, and stylish enough that you could wear them not only to the hospital, but also to lunch, to work, or wherever life takes you.”

When designing and choosing colors and prints, Celine holds to the philosophy of giving women choices, as she believes we all have our own personalities and styles. The brand has diverse themed collections: Sining for bold and artistic patterns; Dalisay and Hinahon for neutral-toned and monochromatic designs; Bukang Liwayway for bright patterns often featuring yellows and blues; and collections like Ligaya, Lila, and Sinag, among others, for deep purples and earthy greens.

“I hope initiatives like Kusog can help people see that a cancer patient is so much more than her diagnosis. When you have cancer, especially when you lose your hair, sometimes people see the illness before they see you,” she says. “But underneath all of that, you are still the same person. You still want to feel beautiful, confident, included, and like yourself.”

Through Kusog, Celine wants to create more honest conversations about how cancer is not only about fear, treatment, and survival. It is also about identity, confidence, connection, and continuing to live your life. The brand has also tapped into outreach programs and partnerships, which she, as the founder, considers one of the most meaningful parts of Kusog, as she gets to give headwraps to patients and remind them that there is a community cheering them on.

“Cancer changes so many things that are beyond your control. Being able to choose what I wore and how I presented myself was one small way of holding on to who I was. That’s what I hope every Kusog head wrap can give another woman too.”

For Celine, design starts with empathy. As both a survivor and a designer, she believes it’s not only about creating something beautiful. It’s about understanding what someone is going through and creating something that can make their experience a little easier, more comfortable, and meaningful.

“If Kusog can show that fashion and design can be used not only for self-expression, but also for compassion, connection, and service, then I feel like we’re creating something much bigger than a head wrap.”
