From Filipiñana to KATSEYE: Wild Hearts, Here Are the Films and Series Coming to the Philippine Screens

August brings a packed lineup of movie and streaming releases in the Philippines, including Cinemalaya films and an Anne Hathaway sci-fi thriller.

Filipino cinephiles have much to look forward to this month, especially with the 22nd edition of Cinemalaya running from August 6 to 18. Aside from that, two films are celebrating their anniversaries: The Mummy Returns and Train to Busan. Meanwhile, Anne Hathaway is staying on the big screen with the release of The End of Oak Street.

The Mummy Returns (25th Anniversary)

After 25 years, The Mummy Returns returns to the big screen on August 5. The story follows Rick and Evelyn O’Connell with their son Alex, as they discover the key to the fabled Bracelet of Anubis.

Train to Busan (10th Anniversary)

Another film marking a milestone is Train to Busan, celebrating 10 years on August 5. The blockbuster hit tells the story of a zombie virus that pushes Korea into a state of emergency, leaving those trapped on an express train to fight for their survival.

Enjoy Your Stay

On August 6, Enjoy Your Stay opens the Cinemalaya 22 Film Festival. Directed by Dominik Locher and Honeylyn Joy Alipio, the story follows Luz, an undocumented Filipina cleaner working in a luxury ski resort to avoid losing custody of her daughter.

A.NI.MÁL (Cinemalaya)

Directed by Dustin Celestino, the film follows the daughter of a mayor who comes home to find a video of a family friend abusing his dog.

Kaka sa Yawan (Cinemalaya)

A coming-of-age-story, Kaka sa Yawan follows two friends in Mindoro: Niko, a Manila city boy, and Ayan, a Mangyan. As the summer progresses, the pair are introduced to each other’s culture.

Ganggang (Cinemalaya)

In this Cinemalaya full-length entry, a city boy named Mell watches fellow kids play with fighting spiders. As he watches in awe, he becomes an ally of Ilay and ten-ten, fighting against a neighborhood bully.

2 Valid IDs (Cinemalaya)

2 Valid IDs, starring Marietta “Pokwang” Subong, follows the story of Sylvia, a poor farmer who is unable to claim the money sent to her because she lacks the required two valid IDs. As she struggles to get the IDs, she questions her character, belief, and morality.

Hand of God (Cinemalaya)

Hand of God follows the story of a young army lieutenant who introduces football to children, set in a remote village haunted by years of conflict.

Status: Rejected (Cinemalaya)

With a cast led by Ruby Ruiz, Status: Rejected tells the story of a grandmother who dreams of love and the promise of a better life, who finds herself in an online romance.

Tayo Lang Ang Nakakaalam (Cinemalaya)

Directed by David R. Copruz, the film follows a man struggling to remain seen within a family, bound by a love that must be kept a secret.

Tirik (Cinemalaya)

Starring Rocco Nacino, Chai Fonacier, and Floyd Tena, Tirik tells the story of a priest, a parishioner, and a taxi driver who go on a journey to reconcile their moral conflicts as they elude an assassination attempt.

Mag-iina (Cinemalaya)

Near the 40th day of her estranged father’s death, a daughter returns to her family’s ancestral home. There, three generations of women are bound together by grief, madness, and evil “thicker than blood.”

The End of Oak Street

Starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, The End of Oak Street opens in Philippine cinemas on August 12. The science fiction thriller follows the story of Oak Street, which is ripped from suburbia by a mysterious cosmic event.

KATSEYE: Wild Hearts

As KATSEYE begins its new era, the international girl group debuts KATSEYE: Wild Hearts on August 12. The documentary features behind-the-scenes footage, fan videos, and intimate interviews.

Nimrods

On August 12, Lee Kirk’s new comedy will hit the screens. Nimrods follows the story of three friends who journey from Kansas City to Los Angeles, mistakenly believing that their band is opening for Green Day on New Year’s Eve.

Ganito, Ganyan, Ganoon

This August 13, Ganito, Ganyan, Ganoon hits Netflix. The comedy-drama film follows high-achieving TV writer Joanne (Jodi Sta. Maria) as she reunites with her estranged mother Paz (Agot Isidro), who returns after 27 years of carrying a secret.

On HBO Max, Call My Manager premieres on August 13. Call My Manager is an eight-episode comedy-drama series following three talent agents as they juggle demanding celebrity clients.

My Brilliant Career

This August 13, Gillian Armstrong’s 1979 Australian coming-of-age drama comes to Netflix. My Brilliant Career follows a headstrong farm girl in late 19th-century Australia who dreams of becoming a writer but must choose between a wealthy suitor’s proposal and her own independence.

Filipiñana

On August 26, Rafael Manuel’s award-winning film, Filipiñana, comes home to the Philippines. Based on his 2020 short thesis film, the story follows Isabel (Jorrybell Agoto) as she feels drawn to Dr. Palanca, the president of the country club where she works.

One Night Only

Starring Callum Turner, Monica Barbaro, and Maya Hawke, One Night Only tells the story of two singles in the city searching for love on the least romantic night of the year.
