Arthur Espiritu built his career overseas, brick by brick. Now back in the Philippines, he presents his first all-kundiman concert at Gallery MiraNila titled Mga Awit ng Pag-Ibig at Kundiman.
After honing his skills overseas while growing up, singing has become a huge part of who he is. Spending so much time away from home, Filipino American, internationally acclaimed tenor Arthur Espiritu is ready to return to the Philippines for his first all-kundiman concert, Mga Awit ng Pagibig at Kundiman.
Ever since his solo debut in 2007, his pursuit of a career as an operatic tenor has remained consistent. For his comeback in the country, he will stage a one-night-only performance on May 14, 2026 at Gallery MiraNila in Quezon City, honoring the legacy of Ambassador Tomas C. Benitez and celebrating Filipino musical heritage.
Fresh from his role as Vladimir in Borodin’s Prince Igor at the Munich Opera House, Espiritu has spent years honing his craft, which eventually earned him recognition on the international stage. More so, having performed in prestigious opera productions and major venues across North America, Europe, and Asia, he became a recipient of the 2009 George London Award and the Scala Award at the Belvedere Competition in Vienna. Bringing this experience back to his country marks another step in his career.
Espiritu’s concert features selections from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts’ (NCCA) newly recorded 13-track archive. It is their first major initiative with the Manila Chamber Orchestra Foundation to digitally preserve Filipino classics performed by the nation’s acclaimed singers. This repertoire also traces the evolution of kundiman, from its patriotic roots to its transition into zarzuela, love songs, and modern art songs.
The event means something to Espiritu, not only because it will be his first time doing an all-kundiman concert or because he is coming back home. It is also because all proceeds will benefit the MiraNila Conservation Program, which has restored numerous at-risk artworks and now prioritizes structural repairs following severe flooding in 2025 that endangered the 97-year-old house.
Espiritu will also share the stage with two other award-winning singers. Stefanie Quintin-Avila, recipient of the Delphic Lyra Award and multiple international citations, joins him once again after their collaboration in 2024, while Najib Ismail, whose career spans Europe, Asia, and Australia, completes the trio.
