The designer’s entry into Vogue Threads is a subversion of the classic idea of the Barong Tagalog.
Drawing inspiration from the Philippine archipelago, designer Jo Ann Bitagcol reimagines the classic barong Tagalog using piña fabric blended with silk fibers and silk satin, modernized by a vintage digital print. “I’m inspired by how the world is evolving and opening to beautiful possibilities,” she shares, as the piece embodies her label’s progressive spirit without losing sight of heritage.
Filipino craftsmanship takes center stage in this piece, with the careful preparation of the piña cloth demonstrating Bitagcol’s deep respect for tradition. The piece’s unisex appeal also makes it versatile in today’s fashion landscape. For Bitagcol, Filipino artisans excel at honoring their roots while embracing innovation. This thoughtful approach results in a garment that is a powerful fusion of craftsmanship and form, representing both the past and future of Filipino fashion. With every detail, the piece embodies pride in identity and culture, a fitting contemporary tribute to the archipelago.
On its second anniversary, Vogue Philippines invites homegrown and global creatives to Vogue Threads, an experience that weaves Philippine culture, creativity, and community into the world. Its inaugural edition celebrates Filipino artistry and heritage, through an exhibit featuring the works of designers from the islands of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
