In August, veteran hairdresser and entrepreneur David Charlton shared his best hair care advice that every person can use, no matter their style or routine
“We bring out the best in you,” were words a kid from the nineties might have heard every morning while waiting for their school bus to pick them up. In the 90s and even the aughts, David Charlton was a regular fixture in morning TV shows, sharing his best advice for young professionals, college students, and mothers who need inspiration for their children’s hairstyles.
Born in Sunderland, England, Charlton started working for his uncle’s salon at 16 and brought his talent to the Philippines in 1978 as a manager of Mandarin Oriental’s in-house salon, Rêver. By 1989, he had founded David’s Salon and has expanded to more than 200 locations across the country.
In one of his last videos, the British hairdresser and businessman shared some of his timeless hair care tips. Here’s a closer look at his expert advice:
Choose a hairstyle that matches your lifestyle
For Charlton, a great haircut starts with understanding the person sitting in the chair. “What’s your lifestyle?” he’d ask. Are you a student, a working professional, or someone looking to make a bold statement?
For a young professional, he suggested polished styles that exude confidence, like softly turned-in ends to frame the face. “It’s about showing you care, not just about yourself but also about how you present to the world,” he shared.
Match hair color to skin tone and occasion
“Your skin tone and lifestyle should guide your color choices,” Charlton advised. For lighter skin tones, he suggested warmer shades like golden browns or subtle reds, especially in office settings. It’s also about matching your undertones as well. If you have golden or yellow undertones, opt for colors with similar warmth. But he also believed in having fun with your color when the occasion calls for it.
Maintain salon-quality styling at home
The late British businessman also understood the challenge of replicating salon styling at home. His advice? Invest in salon-recommended products and take the time to care for your hair. “Spend a little time on yourself,” he urged, encouraging viewers to use the tools and treatments available.
Know when to trust the professionals
Charlton saw too many DIY mishaps, from uneven bangs to broken hair after at-home chemical treatments. His advice was clear: stick to professional stylists for cuts, coloring, and treatments involving chemicals. “It’s safer, lasts longer, and always looks better,” he said.
Treat yourself for special occasions
Charlton believed in the joy of self-care. Whether it’s a party, date night, or an important dinner, Charlton encouraged clients to visit the salon. “It’s not just about looking good, it’s about enjoying the process and feeling pampered,” he said.
