In her words, designing clothes for Just Because is about “timeless elegance that evokes comfortability and a means to uplift fellow women.”
Classic style has been around for a long time. But its resurgence in the last decade can be attributed to celebrities arriving at red-carpet events with coveted archival pulls like Margot Robbie’s Barbie press tour donning vintage Moschino, Chanel, and Versace; Zendaya during Challengers and Dune: Part Two wearing pieces from the 1930s and timeless Vivienne Westwood ensembles; and even the 2024 Met Gala theme, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” has only underscored that well-tailored clothing is a celebration of style across the ages.
Even on the streets, from ultra-feminine designs with a ’90s twist to tailored ensembles ideal for 9-to-5 dressing, these trends make it clear that clean lines and shapes that flatter your body are having a significant moment. Amidst this embrace of timeless looks, Just Because Studio aims to redefine classic fashion for the modern woman by utilizing linen and cotton, materials that are much appreciated in the ever-humid climate of the Philippines.
Launched in July 2023, Just Because Studio was conceived from a desire to create timeless pieces that stand the test of time. Founder Bianca Co shares, “When I was little, I would try to make my own clothes and sell them, and I ended up really enjoying the whole process.” This passion translates into a contemporary clothing line that merges classic silhouettes with modern practicality meant for those who seek comfort in their everyday clothing.
Co’s venture is more than her personal dream; it’s also a testament to the power of women-led initiatives. Inspired by her parents, Bianca ventured into uncharted territory. “The biggest challenge for me is stepping outside of my comfort zone and doing things I’m not used to,” reflects the young designer.
“A taste of summer”
Its first collection features pieces, the Daniella linen dress, Leona linen dress, and Allegra dress, which have become their best-selling pieces and are made from 100 per cent linen and 100 per cent cotton. Each piece, according to Co, is designed to feel gentle on the skin and easy to care for, making them a go-to for casual outings and formal occasions.
“When we design, we envision our customer in a lush garden retreat, wandering among blooming flowers, enjoying leisurely picnics, and hosting intimate dinners with friends under the stars,” shares Co, echoing the sentiments found on Just Because Studio’s online shop as a “taste of summer.”
Creating a lasting impact for women
For the young designer and entrepreneur, empowering other women is a significant part of her vision, even encouraging them to pursue their passion. “Have confidence in yourself and just do it! I had a lot of fears and doubts before starting my own business, but looking back, doing instead of doubting made all the difference for me.” Co also adds that she has learned to embrace making mistakes and treating them as part of the process. It also pushed her to take more risks. “Every mistake I’ve made is what led me to be where I am today.”
Looking ahead, Co envisions an inspiring future for women-led businesses. “I definitely see a lot more women own their spaces in the world of business. I hope that they become empowered to pursue what they love and what they are most passionate about.” She aims to leave a lasting, positive impact, helping women to not be intimidated by the prospect of starting their ventures.
Ultimately, she hopes to leave a lasting impact through Just Because Studio. “I hope that everyone never stops trying and chasing their dreams. Because that’s what I did and that’s what I continue to do every day.”
