In “Passing The Torch,” Vogue Philippines discovers the stories of inspiring people who train, mentor, and shape athletes.

In ancient Greece, there was a type of race called lampadephoria. The participants ran with a lighted torch, handing it to the next player at a certain distance and to the next one, and so on and so forth until the first team reached the finish line. To this day, it heralds the beginning of the Olympic Games, symbolic of passing on sports to the next generation of athletes.

Taking inspiration from lampadephoria, Vogue Philippines launched “Passing The Torch,” which invited its readers to share stories of inspiring people who train, mentor, and shape athletes. Here, we discover the stories of four dedicated coaches who have played the game and are now inspiring a new generation of players.

Meet Betsy Medalla, an open-water swim coach who has devoted her life to the waters and helping others enjoy it. Mariana Lopa, the managing director of Girls Got Game, empowers young girls to become athletes. There’s also equestrian coach Janine Santos-Felix, whose passion for the sport extends to advocating for animals. And there’s Cam Rodriguez, who lends her voice to amplify other athletes.

In Passing The Torch, Betsy, Mariana, Janine, and Cam share their journey as athletes and mentors. Watch the full video below and learn more about their stories on Vogue Philippines.
