The most famous Britpop girlband is definitely not finished yet.

The Spice Girls are back? A reunion project is underway, at least, according to Melanie Brown, better known by her stage name Mel B, one of the singers of the most influential girlband of the 1990s. “We are going to be doing some stuff, all five of us, pretty soon,” she announced on the British news channel Sky News, where she was discussing being a judge on Queen of the Universe, a drag queen singing competition show. “[It’s] going to be announced.” And no doubt the announcement will go down a storm with fans, who dream of seeing Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm, Geri Halliwell, and Melanie Brown reunited. Their wish may soon be granted.

The rediscovered legend of the Spice Girls

Flashback. It’s 1996, and the Spice Girls are releasing Wannabe, a catchy pop tune that has the whole world dancing. The single’s success propelled them to the top of the charts, ranking No.1 in thirty-seven countries and selling seven million copies, and from then on, nothing was the same. Several world tours, hundreds of merchandising products, a video game, and even a movie followed. Spice Mania was born. That was 26 years ago.

Despite their breakup in 2001 following Geri Halliwell’s departure, the Spice Girls remain a tight-knit group, still adored by a large community of loyal followers. They have reunited several times over the past two decades. After delivering an outstanding performance at the closing ceremony of the London Olympics in 2012, the girlband reformed in full, or just about, for a comeback tour in 2019. Although she no longer takes part in live shows, Victoria Beckham still keeps in touch with her stage partners, as evidenced by a few shots posted on her Instagram account. In 2021, Wannabe was re-released in a limited edition for its 25th anniversary.

In May 2023, Melanie Brown confirmed the possibility of a Spice Girls reunion. All five of them. Really. “I can’t say right now because we’re just finishing off perfecting what we’re going to do together, all five of us, but it’s going to be something that the fans are really going to love,” she explained to The Sun newspaper. Although she won’t reveal anymore, she does say that the project should see the light of day very soon. Stay tuned!
