In Vogue Threads, a denim connoisseur merges his expertise in streetwear with traditional Filipino craftsmanship.
Cosmopolitan meets countryside in “Dalagang Bukid ” (Countryside Maiden), the piece Ino Caluza is exhibiting in Paris. The designer behind the label Viktor breathes new life into the baro’t saya, intertwining classic elements with a fresh perspective. The ensemble features a gold denim trucker jacket adorned with piña calado details, a floor-length cargo skirt crafted from Japanese organic cotton, and a pleated tulle and piña silk tapis embellished with pearl-like beads. “The colors of the pleated skirts mimic the glistening grains of rice,” he explains, drawing inspiration from the vibrant shapes and colors of rice harvests, as well as the dayami (haystacks) that punctuate the countryside.
Meticulously crafted through intricate hand-beading and embroidery, this look showcases hours of dedication and artistry. “Our craft is unique because it is based on our traditional culture and a mix of other Asian influences. It is rooted as well in our love of intricate details, artisanal techniques and meticulous design that truly reflects our colorful culture and heritage,” Caluza affirms.
On its second anniversary, Vogue Philippines invites homegrown and global creatives to Vogue Threads, an experience that weaves Philippine culture, creativity, and community into the world. Its inaugural edition celebrates Filipino artistry and heritage, through an exhibit featuring the works of designers from the islands of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
