This Stylist Duo Was Behind Your Favorite Red Carpet Looks This Year

They’re responsible for Tessa Thompson, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Keke Palmer’s winning style.
If you’re just as obsessed with red carpet fashion as we are, then you’ll know that Tessa Thompson and Jodie Turner-Smith were two of this year’s best dressed stars in Hollywood. With a flair for sprightly colors, bold silhouettes, and tradition-defying gowns, they’ve dominated the 2022 step and repeats—and just so happen to share a top stylist.
Rather, stylists. Behind these looks are the duo Wayman + Micah, who have proven to be the year’s breakout stylists and count Thompson, Turner-Smith, Keke Palmer, Thuso Mbedu, and Tiffany Haddish as clients.
Based in Los Angeles, Wayman Bannerman and Micah McDonald have been bringing a strong point-of-view and edge to the Hollywood fashion scene. Together, they’ve rebuked the safe, classic gowns that are expected of a big movie premiere. Instead, they make a statement.
This was on full display at the Venice Film Festival this summer. Every day, Thompson and Turner-Smith stepped out in an ensemble more elaborate than the next. The duo would put Thompson in Interior’s hooded, black netted gown one day, then switch it up with Marc Jacobs’ metallic green ruffles the next. Turner-Smith pulled off denim Balmain evening wear (yes, really), then transitioned with ease into Christopher John Rogers’s abstract-print dress, complete with a dramatic train. Two words came to mind: Fashion drama!
The duo’s refreshing risks stay burned in your memory. When the pair dressed Palmer for her Nope press tour this summer, they gravitated towards the season’s sculptural silhouettes, including a neon-yellow Prada column gown with black opera gloves. When styling Mbedu for The Woman King press, they leaned into more of a whimsical princess vibe—a standout being the Giambattista Valli look she wore to the Academy Museum Gala in October, complete with an embroidered top and frothy tulle skirt. Whichever A-list client they’re working with, they’ve managed to embrace a distinct fashion flavor—though the throughline is utterly fabulous.
