In a series of photographs, Janelle Pietrzak dedicates a love letter to the island of Capri, Italy.
The first time photographer Janelle Pietrzak visited Capri, Italy, she fell madly in love with the beautiful sunsets, bowls of spaghetti alle vongole, and glasses of icy-cold Lacryma Christi wine. She taps into the notes app on her phone: order more film, get a new lens cap. It’s an evolving list of things to remember before spending another summer in Capri, the island she’s vacationed in for eight years in a row now.
“I am starting to get that feeling again, the way one does when you haven’t seen an old lover for years. Will it be the same? Was it as good as I remember?” she writes. “And then, very soon, I will stare out the window of the ferry as Capri comes into view and know with certainty, Italians absolutely do it better.”
These images show Pietrzak’s documentation of Capri over two of those eight summers, capturing sun-kissed bodies lounging in shallow waters, quiet moments in secret gardens, and empty streets at the break of day.
