It’s no secret that celebrities love wearing vintage garments on the red carpet, and this week, a retro sensibility dominated the step and repeats in a variety of stylish ways. The best dressed stars of the bunch were those who either plucked vintage looks from the archive (see: Olivia Rodrigo in her Galliano-era Dior number, worn to her Guts World Tour Netflix premiere) or channeled silhouettes and trends from past decades. Whatever the approach was, these striking looks proved that sometimes, the most modern styling trick you can pull off is looking to the past.
Take Hailey Bieber in her boxy Saint Laurent suit, worn out in L.A. with friends. The suit-and-tie look channeled the 1980s in the best way possible, yet it felt extremely current. Lana Del Rey looked to the Victorian era, meanwhile, at the InStyle Imagemaker Awards; She sported a sweet lace Valentino dress and fur shawl, both of which made references to late-1800s dressing.
There were, however, a few standout looks that felt especially made for 2024. In L.A., Rihanna stepped out in an Acne Studios sweater dress paired with a giant Bottega Veneta bag—the It bag label of the moment. In New York City, Zendaya also reinvented the slip dress on a date night with Tom Holland, wearing a leather version by Louis Vuitton. Talk about luxe.
