Voluminous silhouettes were key at the 2023 Critics Choice Awards.
Tonight, the 28th annual Critics Choice Awards kicked off at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, California. This ceremony—hosted by comedian Chelsea Handler—honored the year’s best performances from film and television. Following last week’s Golden Globes step and repeat, the red carpet event continued on with glitzy awards style; voluminous silhouettes, in particular, proved to be the breakout trend of the night, with Hollywood A-listers embracing formal designs that were adorned with large ruffles or sweeping trains.
The style highlights of the night came courtesy of the Critics Choice’s best actor front runners. Michelle Yeah stunned in a black and pink Carolina Herrera ensemble that had a pink ruffled shawl, which grazed the floor behind her. Elle Fanning leaned into an 18th-century silhouette with an Alexander McQueen calico tulle gown that was complete with a fanned-out skirt. Michelle Williams, meanwhile, went more sleek in her Louis Vuitton column dress with a golden, disco-ball style finish.
The best-dressed men, meanwhile, took fresh approaches to traditional suiting. Miles Teller’s black Gucci tuxedo had the classic black bow tie, while Henry Golding opted for a velvety green tux that had a hint of color. Matt Smith proved you can do no tie at all—rather, he wore a silk blouse with a built-in necktie that was slung loosely around his neck. It still played by the evening wear rules, but felt a little more modern and cool.
