Every year the Met Gala brings together an incredible crowd of fashion designers, models, and the brightest stars of music and film in celebration of the Costume Institute’s latest exhibition. “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” is this year’s show, and it draws from the Costume Institute’s own permanent collection to highlight the multi-sensory experience of wearing clothes. “Fashion is one of the most emotional artistic forms because of its connection to the body,” Andrew Bolton, Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute, explained in a recent interview. “It is imbued with memory and emotions, and we relate to it very much via our senses. One thing I hope this show will activate is that sensorial appreciation of fashion.”
On the 2024 Met Gala red carpet, it is co-chairs Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, and Chris Hemsworth—all of whom can be frequently found on best-dressed lists—that will be setting the tone for the evening. This year’s dress code, “The Garden of Time,” promises a myriad of interpretations, which are sure to yield many looks that surprise and delight. Dove Cameron and Damiano David wear Diesel by Glenn Martens. Her floaty pink floral gown channels old Hollywood whith a flower print chiffon topping a a nude tulle which is treated with the brand’s devoréd process. Equal yardage of chiffon and tulle (60 yards each) was used to make this look which took 60 hours to make (20 on cutting and 40 on construction). Damiano David, lead singer of Eurovision-winning band Måneskin, wears a deconstructed tuxedo with a skin-revealing disintigrating look which is also achieved through the devore technique.

Gigi Hadid walked up the Met steps with five people carrying her dress. Her custom Thom Browne number took 20 people to make. The white dress carries a 3D embroidered yellow rose, and suspended from her corset is a white silk moiré tailored jacket with more rose detailing. The whole thing has 2,800,000 micro bugle beads and took 5,000 hours to embroider. Overall, 70 people were involved in the making of this dress.

Over here at Vogue Runway are big fans of Morgan Spector and Rebecca Hall— the duo are New York theater royalty (according to me!)—and they always turn out incredible red carpet looks. Attending the Met Gala for the first time, he’s in a bold red Willy Chavarría suit, and she’s in a romantic Danielle Frankel. The stairs at the Met Gala are notoriously intimidating, but Spector had a clear idea of how to tackle those first-time jitters. “I am attending with my wife, and her dress has a train, so I’m planning on staying at least 20 steps from her at all times.” We love a careful king!
