The ladies love a humble sneaker.
We at Vogue keep track of what the top models are wearing. Their looks are often composed of some sort of rare archival vintage, a hero bag that fetches four figures, and maybe a fresh-from-the-runway unreleased piece. And yet, many of these models are wearing shoes that are under $100 dollars, specifically sneakers. Take Kendall Jenner, who recently has strutted out in a slinky, curve-skimming black dress and, later, a simple chunky sweater and jeans—she paired both looks with a low-key, tri-stripe Adidas Samba sneaker.
Jenner hasn’t been the only supermodel embracing easy-breezy shoes. In the past, Emily Ratajkowski, Kaia Gerber, and Bella Hadid have worn styles from classic Converse Chuck Taylors to Phoebe Philo-beloved Adidas Stan Smiths and grandpa-approved New Balance 574 Cores.
So why an affordable sneaker with a break-the-bank outfit? Though they aren’t models, the Olsen twins are stellar examples of this high-low concept. The duo have slipped their feet into everything from New Balances and Adidas to Vans, and are often photographed in outfits from their own quiet yet expensive luxury label, The Row. Their shoes show that they have nothing to prove: Their style is unimpeachable, and that includes their unfussy footwear. No stilettos here.
