Crafted by Negrense artisans, the collection brings local materials to everyday footwear.
With the number of outdoor activities popping up on the trend list every month, it seems like everyone will never run out of side quest ideas. Lakat Sustainables kept this in mind when making its new shoe collection, a reimagined version of its classic silhouette. The sustainable twist comes from using pineapple leaves, which are processed into threads for each pair.
Lakat Sustainables launched the Traveller’s Collection exclusively at the Purveyr Fair 2026 at the World Trade Center. Designed by Steph Claparols, daughter of the brand’s founders, Michael and Banj Claparols, the collection integrates Lakat’s classic silhouette using its signature pineapple fabric with a newly designed sole.
“Lakat’s new shoe design encapsulates the feeling of exploration. Its outsole is what draws attention. Each side has its own distinct curves. We followed the curve of the foot for the insides. The outsoles, meanwhile, have a different curve. To me, it evoked movement like a wave moving forward,” Steph says in a statement.
In collaboration with visual artist and designer Jadon Kilayko, they wanted the collection to look outdoor-ready by using colorways inspired by natural landscapes. “They reference our adventures like hiking up a mountain, drifting through a river, dipping into the sea, or simply taking a stroll in the fields,” she adds.
Each pair from the collection is made by Negrense weavers and farmers using pineapple leaves that would otherwise be food waste. Lakat Sustainables works with local artisans whose craft has been passed down through generations, supporting their work while incorporating a part of Visayan craft into the collection.
The founders of Lakat Sustainables were also intentional about making the collection more versatile; it doesn’t just fit those who spend their time outdoors, but also those who enjoy their leisure time in the city. As Steph says, “It’s a reflection of what we naturally enjoy to do: explore. And it’s through these adventures that we learn the most about ourselves, meet like-minded trekkers, and grow into our becoming.”
