The capsule collection celebrates the shared values of its creators, from female empowerment to bold individualism.

For several generations around the world, Sailor Moon brings back strong memories of the 1990s. Though it started off as a one-off manga by Naoko Takeuchi, titled Codename: Sailor V, the story was eventually picked up by Japanese company Toei Animation to be brought to life on screen.

Soon, the 14-year-old female protagonist named Sailor Moon, who alongside her fellow Sailor Soldiers would fight against evil forces, was found on screens all across the globe. The women-led series became a global phenomenon. Alongside titles like Dragon Ball Z and Pokémon, the hit show went on to pioneer an entire movement that introduced anime to the West.

This slingshotted the genre into the mainstream media, which before the 1990s was dominated by entertainment from the United States and Britain. Unlike before, Hollywood was now looking to Asia for inspiration. To this day, decades later, Sailor Moon continues to define the aesthetic surrounding much of ’90s nostalgia.

For the 30th anniversary of the series, its characters are yet again brought to life—this time through the medium of fashion. Jimmy Choo, which has become a household name for its designer shoes, is paying homage to the mold-breaking manga.

Creative director Sandra Choi designed the capsule collection based on the brand’s shared values with Sailor Moon; bold individuality, zeitgeist-defining imagery, and female empowerment. “Being able to work so closely with Naoko Takeuchi has been so inspiring,” Choi says. “The notion of transformation via fashion is central to Naoko Takeuchi, and clothes play a vital role in the identity of her super heroines, especially their shoes, the most powerful transformer you can step into.”

According to Sailor Moon creator Naoko Takeuchi, Jimmy Choo as a fashion house embodies the same concepts and values. “I am extremely happy that the characters and stories that came from my imagination are now loved by many people around the world,” the artist says. “What has always been truly important to me is the youthful, pure imagination and power of the young girls.”

The resulting collaboration reveals itself through its range of bags and shoes, which make use of each of the Sailor Soldier’s signature colors. The tribute kicked off last June 2022 with made-to-order hot pink boots embellished with Swarovski crystals. This February, the brand is debuting its full range of pieces.
