Simon Porte Jacquemus knows how to host a fashion show. After the lavender-blanketed hills of Provence, a golden wheat field, and the salt flats of Camargue, he brought his newest Le Chouchou collection to the grounds of the Palace of Versailles. Jacquemus’s front rows have become just as starry as the supermodel casting—today David and Victoria Beckham were among the guests who watched the runway from white rowing boats moored on the lake at the edge of a spectacular scarlet runway, which meandered through the gardens of the historic palace.
Beckham wore a soft pink slip dress with a flowing asymmetric hemline and dainty spaghetti straps, and a giant ruffled flower adorning her right hip (perhaps a nod to the garden setting). Light and breezy, it was an ideal choice for late June in France. Beckham always puts style over comfort, however, and so instead of an obvious choice like strappy sandals, she wore thigh-high peep toe boots underneath her slip dress (could it be that VB subscribes to the “wrong-shoe theory”?).
Skin-tight, thigh-high boots are certainly an unconventional choice in the height of summer, however this style has been a hero piece for Beckham’s namesake brand for several seasons now, and has long been a style signature for the star. Always the best ambassador for her own designs, this isn’t the first time she’s worn her peep-toe boots in an unlikely setting—earlier this year she wore a red version to “lounge by the pool”. She was first seen wearing black leather peep-toe ankle boots in 2012, and since then she has added many more colorways to her personal collection and to her brand’s offering.
David, meanwhile, went for a more conventional summer look, wearing a beige linen trouser suit with a single-breasted jacket, which he paired with dark sunglasses, a white tank top and brown leather two-strap sandals. As they sailed up to the runway by rowing boat, David held a white parasol while Victoria fanned herself with a large white fan as they posed for photographs.
Jacquemus always stays outside of the traditional show calendar, however the Le Chouchou show coincided with the end of Paris Fashion Week Men’s. Other stars on the front row (or should we say on the water) included Emily Ratajkowski, Eva Longoria and Monica Bellucci, who watched the likes of Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid walk down the raised scarlet runway outside of Versailles. With the Beckhams on a boat and Gigi Hadid as a queen of Versailles—it looks like Jacquemus has outdone himself again when it comes to wow factor.
