Alessandro Michele
Alessandro Michele’s exit from the Italian heritage brand rocked the global fashion industry. In the wake of the announcement, celebrities and fashion insiders paid their tributes to the visionary designer, among them Vogue UK editor-in-chief Edward Enninful and Harry Lambert, singer Harry Styles’ stylist. Styles, along with actor Jared Leto and Dakota Johnson are among the prominent names who worked with Michele, with Styles recently releasing a capsule collection with the brand.
Even in the Philippines, the energy that Michele brought to the Gucci brand resounded. Household names like Anne Curtis-Smith and Heart Evangelista have often worn the Roman designer’s garments in vibrant prints and sleek silhouettes.
Michele was widely acknowledged to have re-energized Gucci via his eccentric and forward-thinking aesthetic that ushered in a greater acceptance of “otherness.” Throughout his collections, nostalgia has been the main feature that has made Michele’s oeuvre distinct with babushkas, bows, and clashing patterns in tow. He combined inspiration from the past such as the culture of the fifties and cinema, with contemporary references such as Los Angeles’ street style. With quirky vintage flair, his collections veered towards whimsical androgyny with renaissance and fine art references. Flora and fauna motifs were injected into each collection, alongside the double-G logo and Gucci’s striped athletic ribbing.
