Anya Taylor-Joy Forgoes Method Dressing for Old Hollywood Glamour in Cannes

Anya Taylor-Joy will not be playing the method dressing game at the Cannes Film Festival, thank you very much. The actor hit the Croisette today for the premiere of her film, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga in a look that is decidedly more “Old Hollywood” than it is “post-apocalyptic biker.”

To mark the occasion, Taylor-Joy leaned into the glamour of the French Riviera festival, creating a healthy boundary between herself and her character. (Taylor-Joy told The New York Times: “I’ve never been more alone than making that movie.”)

She wore a sparkly champagne haute couture dress from Dior with a strapless corseted bodice and a full skirt supported by a tulle layer beneath. The custom dress required 1,200 hours of embroidery and was made over 850 hours. The actor donned equally opulent accessories, wearing a necklace, earrings, and rings from Tiffany & Co. high jewelry. The sculptural platinum necklace contains 68 carats of diamonds, the white gold studs total 17 carats, and her rings are 15 and five carats apiece.

The dress itself has Old Hollywood roots: It was inspired by the “Mexico” dress from Christian Dior’s fall 1957 collection, which was worn by Carmen Dell’Orefice in a Richard Avedon photo from October that same year.

Taylor-Joy added a timeless beauty look to match her transcendent dress and statement jewelry. She swept her hair into an impressive updo and added a dramatic red lip for a pop of color.

The actor has turned Cannes into her runway over the past few days. She has impressed us with her collection of over-the-top sun hats and repurposed Jacquemus bridal-wear. Anya Taylor-Joy is making a very solid case for the return to glamour.
