Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll be aware that Anne Hathaway is reprising her role as harassed magazine assistant Andy Sachs in the sequel to 2006 classic The Devil Wears Prada. For many actors, revisiting their most famous character might be enough to be getting on with, but the same can’t be said for Hathaway. She is also starring as a global megastar in crisis opposite Michaela Coel in A24’s psychological drama-thriller Mother Mary, which promises to be a Phantom Thread X Suspiria X Lady Gaga Chromatica extravaganza.

At the New York premiere on Monday night, Hathaway dabbled in a touch of method dressing, wearing a custom Lever Couture gown fashioned from folded swathes of shimmering sheer fabric, and matching metallic Louboutins. A favorite brand of Gaga herself, the Los Angeles designer memorably kitted out the Mayhem singer for the “Hold My Hand” music video back in 2022, which saw her cosplay as Tom Cruise in Top Gun while wearing a couture gown made of parachutes. Judging by the trailers for Mother Mary, Anne will deliver on similarly exuberant performance wear in the film—although there are no meat dresses in sight.

Mother Mary is truly stacked on the talent front, with original music from Charli XCX and Jack Antonoff and a supporting cast that includes FKA twigs, Hunter Schafer and Kaia Gerber. The plot centers on the making of the ultimate comeback dress, designed on-screen by Coel and off-screen by Iris van Herpen, so no wonder Hathaway required a red-carpet look that would make a splash.
