The trick to most good beauty looks—and hairstyles, for that matter—lies in how it balances out the face. Whether it’s contouring a cheekbone to lend height to a softer jawline or accentuating an eyebrow arch to open up the eye area, a good makeup artist always seeks to create some form of symmetry when working with a client.
Take this softly diffused feline eyeliner Selena Gomez wore over the weekend. The look, created by makeup artist Hung Vanngo, it made her entire face appear more elongated. As someone with a rounder face shape and beautifully petite features, a liner like this makes her eyes a focal point, creating the illusion of extra width at eye level, subsequently making her face appear longer.
Vanngo, who also works with Jennifer Lawrence and Cindy Crawford, created an eyeliner shape that followed the contour of Gomez’s cheekbone up to her temple. It’s a fantastic trick if you’re ever wondering what angle to draw your own flick. It’s precise but still softly blended in for a lighter effect—and from there, Vanngo paired Gomez’s eyeliner with an oxblood lip. Simple, chic, and perfectly on trend for fall’s black cherry trend.
