“Marilyn Was My Character”: Gigi Hadid on Her Met Gala 2024 Glam

She’s a woman who has inspired millions of beauty routines: actress Marilyn Monroe. Most recently, Gigi Hadid cited her as the beauty inspiration for her 2024 Met Gala beauty look.

“At some point in the fitting process with Thom Browne, I started to create a character,” Hadid says. “That’s what’s so fun about the Met Gala—it’s fashion’s night to really have fun with it.”

Hadid’s fun began with a red lip for the evening—“my favorite, Maybelline Vinyl Ink, which is glossy and will stay all night. It’s my favorite.” The rest of the Marilyn beauty came together naturally. A smudgey-flick of liner, her naturally full eyebrows, and a wash of color on her cheeks were some other beauty details. Then there were her defined lashes, courtesy of Maybelline New York’s just-released Lash Sensational Firework Mascara. This was the first time the inky mascara, which has conditioning B₅ vitamins in the formula, has been seen on the red carpet.

For her hair, Hadid had Chris McMillan shape up the bob she chopped earlier this year.

“Marilyn is such an icon and really fits the theme of ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,’” Hadid shares. “It made me think, if Thom Browne had designed something for Marilyn, it would look like what I’m wearing tonight.”
