Take a look on the bright side with this season’s love for colorful makeup.
Like a meadow that’s come alive in spring with all manner of flowers abloom, the beauty world is likewise experiencing a color renaissance courtesy of pops of optimistic hues on lids, lips and cheeks.
Punchy and playful, these makeup shades hint with gusto at brighter times ahead and are a mood-boosting way to instantly revamp one’s look.
Designers definitely got the memo, complementing their spring collections with bright beauty from every color of the rainbow, giving models a cheerful glow.
Draw inspiration from Alice and Olivia’s girls strutting confidently with eyes awash in bold tones of aqua, magenta, and vermillion. At Prabal Gurung, models captivated in bursts of lavender eyeshadow, while Batsheva’s muses were alluring with glittery cobalt eyes.
For a softer, Parisienne take, pastel hues of marigold and turquoise were rendered into graphic cat eyes at Paul & Joe.
Lips got the painterly treatment as well, with pouts tinted a supple scarlet at Carolina Herrera, to complement designer Wes Gordon’s florals for the label’s secret garden themed collection.
And while blush may at times have been secondary to eyes or lips, this season it is making a statement. Swept all over the cheeks and sometimes with even a touch on the bridge of one’s nose, or extending upwards to one’s temple, they’re doing double duty as contour as well. The result is equal parts youthful and artistic, instantly brightening up one’s complexion, like it did the blushing beauties at Altuzarra and Anna Sui.
It’s color therapy at its finest; a spin-off of “dopamine dressing” for beauty if you will. And with travel on the horizon and the vivacious summer months not too far ahead, it’s sure to be a go-to look that’s set to get your gorgeous all season long.
Bright Eyes
Blue eyeshadow was a clear runway stunner, and have been spotted on celebs like Kendall Jenner and Taylor Swift, as well as many others. We love Pat McGrath Labs’ Celestial Div Eye Palette for its mix of oceanic blue and practical neutrals. If you prefer one that glides, Cle de Peau Beaute’s Cream Eye Color Solo in 303 gives lids the gorgeous blue of a summer’s day.
Let purple reign with Shiseido’s Essentialist Eye Palette in Cat Street Pops, whose complementary hues allow one to easily go from bright violet eyes to a darker violet smolder. Or try Nars’ Eyeshadow Duo in Kauai which blends iridescent gold with soft orchid.
For high-impact pigment in a crease-resistant and blendable formulation, there’s nothing like MAC’s Eye Shadows, which come in a kaleidoscope of expressive tones.
Known for intense color with very little fallout, Urban Decay’s eyeshadows are cult favorites for a reason, and the 24/7 Shadows bring small, but supercharged energy to one’s makeup routine.
If you’re just easing into the trend, start with colored eyeliner which can be just as impactful. Try Stila’s Stay All Day ArtiStix Graphic Liner, which can be drawn onto lids for a dose of color, or smudged to create a diffused look before it sets into its waterproof finish.
Draw inspiration from the country’s breathtaking sunsets and color lids with its watercolor hues like those seen in Nars’ Afterglow Eyeshadow Palette.
Painterly Pouts
Luminous, creamy, and impossibly elegant, Tom Ford’s Lip Color is one that’s sure to be on regular rotation for its intense color payoff and fade-resistant finish.
Encased in the most iconic of tubes, Pat McGrath Labs’ BlitzTrance Lipstick scintillates with hypnotic color and a subtle pearlescent glow that’s sure to keep you, and everyone else, coming back for more.
Create a charming doll-like pout with a swathe of hot pink on the lips. We love the sugary shades of Clinique’s Lip Pop in Wow Pop and Hermes’ Satin Lipstick in Rose Mexique.
Luxuriate lips with a velvety finish courtesy of Estee Lauder’s Pure Color Whipped Matte Lip Color – a light-as-air liquid lipstick that’s also infused with nourishing moringa butter and hyaluronic acid.
Blushing Beauty
Who can resist makeup that’s both colorful and cute? We can’t, which is why Clinique’s Cheek Pop Blush is a fave, vibrant and buildable formulation perfect for creating a natural-looking flush.
Blush, when strategically placed, can also help sculpt the face aside from imbuing it with color. Create layers of dimension with these glam treats – Smashbox Halo Cheek Palette and Laura Mercier Opening Night Cheek Palette.
Fusing vivid summery hues with illuminating powders make Hourglass’ Ambient Lighting Blush the perfect product to add a rosy but sophisticated glow to cheeks.
For a dewy and sunkissed look, opt for cream and liquid formulations, as these melt into skin with a soft-focus effect. Giving faces a rosy flush, Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush has clearly earned its place in the zeitgeist. Chanel’s N°1 de Chanel Lip and Cheek Balm is another buttery treat. Enriched with red camellia oil, it plumps lips and cheeks while adding color.
