Inside Amal Clooney’s ‘Face Framing’ Boho Haircut For Summer

Amal Clooney is an icon many times over. From her incredible work as a human rights activist and barrister (most importantly) to her closet filled with vintage Galliano slip dresses and Pucci sets, there’s much to be admired. And don’t forget her incredible glam, too.

Earlier this week, she visited Bangkok for The Cartier Dialogues Women Lighting Path event. Her go-to glam artist, Dimitris Giannetos, was on hand to do both her hair and makeup for the occasion. The first step? A bit of a trim.

Dubbed the “bell bottom haircut” by Giannetos, the shape recalls the shape of the hallmark boho garment of the ’70s—lean on the top, curved on the bottom. “The bell bottom cut is perfect for people with a V-shaped face,” he shares with Vogue. “It’s blunt with a little bit of bounce, but still face framing.” The look is a little bit boho, and yet still, very polished, as well as a natural extension—and grow out—of Clooney’s major chop last fall.

To fight the humidity of Thailand, Giannetos (with help from his assistant David Mazzotta) coated Clooney’s hair with L’Oreal Paris EverPure Sulfate Free Iron Sleek Shield. From there, he used a small round brush for the blowout, then pinned the hair in curls until cool—that’s an old-school beauty technique that helps set the hair in a certain style. He finished off the look with a periwinkle eye, mauve lip, and light-touch blush to match Clooney’s gorgeous Prada dress.

If you want to emulate the bell bottom look à la Amal Clooney, Giannetos advises that the hair should be cut blunt without layers. If you already have layers cut into the look, don’t fret—tape-in extensions (like those from Great Lengths) can be added to create the blunt shape.

You can get a bell bottom haircut even with layers by using tape-in extensions to fill out the shape and create the required blunt, uniform bottom line.

The bell bottom haircut best suits a V-shaped face because its structural frame adds perfectly balanced volume and polish around the lower jawline and cheekbones.
