The stars at the Oscars 2023 channeled the silver screen and glorious technicolor.
Stars at the 95th annual Academy Awards arrived at the prestigious event dressed in their most elegant attire. This year, in keeping with the tradition-breaking trend, they were greeted by a champagne-colored carpet instead of the iconic red carpet, for the first time in 62 years. The major change seemed to set the precedent for the rest of the evening.
According to experts in the film industry, this year’s winners were harder to predict than usual, with several categories remaining wide open, with no clear winners. As the show came to a close, it was clear that the indie blockbuster film, Everything, Everywhere, All At Once dominated the event. Directed by the Daniels, the eccentric multiverse film phenomenon took home seven Academy Awards, including major categories such as Best Picture, Best Director, and a historic Best Actress win for Michelle Yeoh.
The 60-year-old Malaysian star became the first Asian woman and only the second woman of color to win the award. In keeping with the groundbreaking streak, Sarah Polley took home the award for Best Adapted Screenplay for the film Women Talking, where she thanked the Academy for “not being mortally offended by the words women.” Likewise, RRR became the first Indian production in two decades to be nominated for an Oscar. RRR’s song “Naatu Naatu” became the first Indian production to be nominated and win Best Song.
For the dazzling, history-making night, many celebrities decided to dawn ethereal whites and silvers. Like a scene from MGM’s Ziegfeld Girls, actresses like Jamie Lee Curtis, Jessica Chastain, Kate Hudson, and Michelle Williams stepped out in sterling silver gowns. They were joined by filmmaker Ava DuVernay and activist author Malala Yousafzai, both in their own shimmering versions of the trend.
In contrast to the silvery choices, other stars chose jewel-toned hues that stood out against the cream-toned arrival venue. Everything, Everywhere, All At Once actress Stephanie Hsu stepped out in a strapless bubblegum pink gown, alongside The Little Mermaid star Halle Bailey in sky blue. Sandra Oh arrived in a bright orange draped gown, while Selma Hayek stunned in a glittering ruby-colored outfit. Angela Bassett “did the thing” yet again, arriving in a showstopping billowy purple dress and statement necklace.
