Why Bemotrizinol Is the Sunscreen Ingredient to Know

The ingredient has been used in Asia and Europe for decades. Its recent U.S. FDA approval is putting it back in the spotlight.

Whenever we’re talking about sunscreens, the advice is almost always the same: “Regardless of the weather, wear your SPF!” And it’s true. Even during the rainy season, UV rays can still affect your skin as they pass through the skin barrier. Exposure isn’t limited to the outdoors, either. So even if there’s absolutely no reason to go out, experts stand by their advice: Wear your sunscreen.

While sunscreen advice often focuses on applying SPF consistently, the ingredients behind these formulas continue to evolve as well. One ingredient that has recently gained attention is bemotrizinol. Although its over-the-counter approval by the FDA for the U.S. market only came in June 2026, bemotrizinol has already been used in Asia and Europe since the ’90s. With all the recent buzz, what makes it such a big deal, and why is it suddenly the talk of the town? Dr. Matt Arffa, a board-certified dermatologist and Mohs micrographic and dermatologic surgeon, sits down with Vogue Philippines to share his expert opinion on how this ingredient can affect your skin.

How bemotrizinol works

If Dr. Arffa had to first describe bemotrizinol, it’s this: It is in many ways superior sunscreen to those we commonly have. “Bemotrizinol and other chemical sunscreens work by absorbing harmful UV rays and converting it into thermal energy (heat) which quickly dissipates. This allows it to prevent the harmful UV rays from entering your skin and causing damage,” he says. Aside from this, bemotrizinol can also block both UVA and UVB wavelengths that makes it broad spectrum. 

What makes it different from other sunscreen ingredients

Compared to other sunscreens, bemotrizinol is broad-spectrum and can cover both UVA and UVB wavelengths. Dr. Arffa also says that another good thing about it is that it is photostable, which makes it more durable when exposed to visible light, while other sunscreens tend to degrade. For those who have sensitive skin, there are also fewer safety concerns about this because bemotrizinol is a large molecule that is minimally absorbed into the skin.

Benefits of bemotrizinol

This ingredient allows sunscreen to prevent sunburns, but it can also help reduce sun-induced aging of the skin and the risk of skin cancer, all in one ingredient. “Think of it as an invisible armor that lies on top of your skin, absorbing the harmful UV rays,” says Dr. Arffa. Being photostable also helps make it more durable when you are out in the sun. Dr. Arffa adds that sunscreen formulations containing bemotrizinol can also be less greasy, more lightweight, and less likely to leave a white cast, which is good news for someone living in a tropical climate like the Philippines.

Which skin type suits it best

Another piece of good news is that it is overall a pretty safe ingredient for most people. According to Dr. Arffa, it can very rarely cause an allergic reaction. But if allergy symptoms persist, immediately consult a dermatologist to check for a reaction to bemotrizinol or any other sunscreen ingredient. Since it is not a mineral sunscreen, it also does not leave a white cast, which makes it easier to blend regardless of skin tone.

Misconceptions about bemotrizinol

Aside from constantly hearing, “Wear your SPF,” of course, there’s also, “Reapply your sunscreen.” Dr. Arffa says that while bemotrizinol is very photostable, people should also be diligent about reapplying because it still won’t last all day. “It still loses efficacy, and things like sweat can make the sunscreen run off,” he says.

He also debunks online rumors that chemical sunscreens disrupt normal endocrine pathways. “This is not true for bemotrizinol at all, and no sunscreens have demonstrated [effects] in any endocrine pathways. Bemotrizinol is such a large molecule, it is practically impossible for it to go through the skin and enter your bloodstream.”
