Madonna Played Keeper in Swarovski-Covered Gloves at The 2026 World Cup Halftime Show

With the United States playing host to the 2026 World Cup, expectations for a high-wattage global spectacle of a finale have been high: and so, queen of the dancefloor Madonna swapped the ballroom for the MetLife Stadium pitch.

At the tense final between the titan teams of Spain and Argentina, Madonna took to the stage (along with Shakira, Justin Bieber, Coldplay and BTS) for the first-ever FIFA World Cup halftime show. “Bring Your Love?” Bring your game!

And Madonna’s look matched her own A-game performance, in appropriately sparkling custom Swarovski and Saint Laurent: a bleached-purple sporty jacket, corset, and coordinating short-shorts, with lace lilac stockings and stompy boots. The star arrived through the underbelly of the stadium in an open-top car flanked by dancers, driven by the beaming Ronaldinho and Ronaldo out onto the grass. She kicked festivities off with “Music” into “Bring Your Love.”

When conceptualizing, longtime stylist Rita Melssen began with the visual language of the sport itself. “We wanted the looks to feel authentic and celebrate the players,” she tells Vogue. “We drew inspiration from classic soccer warm-up kits while also paying homage to Madonna’s signature athleisure style.”

Melssen looked in particular to paparazzi images of Madonna traveling to and from workouts during the ’90s and early ’00s. “Those images capture her essence, which is strong, confident, sexy and effortlessly cool,” she explains. “I wanted to channel that energy while elevating it for the stage.” That attitude was reinterpreted through a custom Saint Laurent look, balancing athletic references with global performance-worthy polish. While Madonna’s recent Confessions II era has largely been defined by shades of pink and purple, Melssen shifted the palette toward a softer mauve. The colour allowed the costume to feel distinct for the occasion, while remaining connected to the broader visual identity of the excellent new album.

“The biggest challenge was creating something that felt special enough to open the inaugural FIFA World Cup Halftime Show while staying true to the concept,” Melssen says. Swarovski crystal embellishment elevated the look through custom detailing, developed for Madonna and the wider cast of dancers, bringing “a sense of celebration, joy, and glamour” to the costumes without losing their athletic aesthetic. Among the most playful details were a pair of custom fingerless gloves, created with embellishment artist Le Rhinestud and inspired by the bold graphic patterning of traditional goalkeeper gloves. The gloves were covered in Swarovski crystals, while a bespoke crystal referee whistle offered a more literal – and irreverent – nod to the sport. Percolating stadium lights picked up the shimmer and sparkle in Madonna and her back-up dancer’s looks.

Melssen also collaborated with Swarovski on custom necklaces and earrings in fuchsia, citrus green, royal purple, clear and blue-violet. Central to the jewelry story was the Millenia necklace, which has appeared repeatedly throughout Madonna’s Confessions II album rollout: “Incorporating it into this look helped connect this performance to the era’s broader visual language.”

Glam had to be just as powerful on the pitch. Madonna’s go-to make-up artist Marcelo Gutierrez created a luminous, high-impact beauty look that also spoke to the ongoing Confessions II visual world, as well as her latest KIKO Milano campaign. “For a performance that is going to be seen by almost two billion people, we wanted to really cement and lean into the beauty story we have already created,” Gutierrez tells Vogue. For complexion, he focused on dimension without weighing down the skin. “A lot of the techniques I use, both for Madonna and my work in general, are very much based in painting,” he explains. “I apply very sheer layers of cream and then powder to build depth.”

Guttierz prepared Madonna’s face with KIKO Milano’s Love Fusion 24H Moisture Radiant Foundation in 1.5NR Neutral Rose and Love Fusion 24H Moisture Radiant Concealer in 02 Light Sand. Matte Fusion Pressed Powder in 11 set the base, while Smart Color Blush in 11 and Velvet Touch Creamy Stick Blushes in shades 05 and 07 added warmth and softly sculpted color. For the eyes, he layered High Pigment Eyeshadows in shades 45, 30, 36, 20 and 37 with the Glamour Multi Finish Eyeshadow Palette in 04. Everlasting Eyeliner Crayon in 01 Kajal and Maxi Mod Long Lasting Volume & Definition Mascara brought further intensity and definition. The lips were defined with Everlasting Color Precision Lip Liner in 517 and Creamy Lipstick in 107 Gossamer Emotion, followed by 3D Hydra Lip Gloss in 01 and Kissable Lip Volume Plumping Cream in 03 for a dimensional, glossy finish.

The performance also called for an additional detail. “Something a little different we did for this performance was adding Swarovski crystals to the eye to really catch the light beautifully during the performance and under her sunglasses,” Gutierrez says.

To keep the make-up fresh and secure throughout the performance, Gutierrez relied on careful preparation rather than heavy application. “My best advice is prepping the skin really well with wonderful skincare and hydration, and taking your time layering color with sheer layers rather than applying a lot of color immediately,” he says.

Behind the scenes, the process of getting Madonna prepped for the world stage is as one would expect. “Glam with Madonna is the best part of the night,” Gutierrez says. “It’s a kiki. We catch up, we listen to music, and we talk about life and art.”
