Contributing fashion editor Anna Rosa Vitiello thoughts on Andrea Pomilio’s latest line

Creative director Andrea Pomilio’s Onitsuka Tiger is undeniably cool, the quiet kind of cool you can’t quite put your finger on but you probably want to buy into. Season after season the Japanese label reminds us that its finger is always on, if not ahead of, the pulse, and AW25’s purposefully not put together collection affirms its contemporary appeal.

Called Urban Duality, the line juxtaposed the energy of Tokyo’s bustling center against the serene backdrop of its surrounding rural areas. Where these influences converge, Pomilio translated into every element of the collection, turning out looks that felt as magnetic as show’s impressive front row, with stars from Korean actor Wi Ha-Joon to Heart Evangelista showed up in head-to-toe Onitsuka Tiger.

From classic pea coats and wool twinsets and the brand’s classic sneakers, wearable wardrobe was the mindset, but this did not stop Pomolio from surprising. No pairing was predictable; louche silk dresses with oversized jackets felt fresh, juxtaposed with ballerina flats and casual pullovers, while double-layered Nordic-style knits and Brit-inspired waxed-cotton jackets spoke of influences from further afield. Almost exaggeratedly slimmed, cropped tailoring silhouettes and shrunken peacoats lent a knowing edge to otherwise classic pieces, bringing a modernity to staples we know and love.

But it was an obvious nod to personal style that really stole the show. The very contrasts inspired by the dichotomies of the city also spoke to Tokyo’s unique and enduring influence on the fashion world, where unexpected elements made for style that is anything but predictable. Dandy-inspired scarves were worn as ties whilst collars were imperfectly popped on one side, tying together cross-cultural influences with ease.

The line represented what’s exciting about fashion now, and long may individuality reign.
