Here’s a round-up of this year’s most talked-about moments as the stars were arriving at the Met Gala.
Dubbed “Fashion’s biggest night,” the Met Gala 2023 saw the attendance of prominent personalities in popular culture and fashion today. This year’s gala pays homage to fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, in line with the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute’s latest exhibition, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.”
People around the world tuned in to see the fashion and to talk about showstopping moments on the red carpet. At the time of writing, the hashtag #MetGala already has 2.54 million tweets and counting. From a showstopping entrance to the unexpected way some personalities paid tribute to Lagerfeld, here’s a quick round-up of the trending moments from this year’s Met Gala.
Pregnancy Announcements
Personalities came to the Met Gala with an unexpected additional guest: babies. Karlie Kloss revealed she is expecting her second child with her husband, Joshua Kushner, at the Met Gala red carpet. The supermodel walked the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in a body-hugging Loewe black floor-length gown, revealing her baby bump and saying “This is the first time I’m sharing my news.” Meanwhile, professional tennis player Serena Williams also announced her second pregnancy by saying there were “three of us here” on the red carpet when she arrived with her husband Alexis Ohanian. Her baby bump was also showing in her black and white Gucci ensemble.
Nicole Kidman Rewearing Her Dress From The Chanel N°5 Ad
Social media instantly recognized Nicole Kidman’s dress at the Met Gala. The actress paid tribute to Lagerfeld in a nostalgic way: she re-wore the couture dress she had on for her 2004 Chanel N°5 ad, along with a black bow in her hair. Kidman was also reunited on the red carpet with the director of the commercial, Baz Luhrmann, who Kidman had famously worked with in the film Moulin Rouge.
Choupette-Inspired Looks
Interpretations of this year’s theme varied on the red carpet: some wore vintage and archival Chanel pieces designed by Lagerfeld, while others chose to wear outfits inspired by the designer and the brands he helmed. But one of the unexpected ways the personalities paid homage was to come as Lagerfeld’s cat, Choupette. Doja Cat came in an Oscar de la Renta gown with facial prosthetics. Lil Nas X went full club kid, arriving in silver body paint, matching silver platform boots, and a rhinestone-encrusted face mask and neck in a cat design. Jared Leto took it one step further and arrived in a giant Choupette costume.
Karl Lagerfeld Train
Jeremy Pope’s entrance literally halted the Met Gala with an attire that took six people to set up at the Metropolitan Museum steps. He came in a showstopping custom Balmain ensemble with an oversized train featuring Karl Lagerfeld’s iconic profile. Pope arrived with Balmain’s creative director Oliver Rousteing, who paid tribute to Lagerfeld with a tote bearing the words “Karl Who?” on spray paint.
