The entire best-actor category is composed of first-time nominees.
Over the years, the Oscars have established a number of unfortunate conventions (ahem, zero women nominated in the best-director category yet again, insert eye roll here), but if you thought that Hollywood’s biggest night would be completely devoid of excitement in 2023, think again. The awards-show industrial complex actually had a few surprises in store.
This year’s Academy Award nominees were announced by Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams on Tuesday morning, and to wit, they boasted a notable number of first-time nominees. They included the entire best-actor category—Colin Farrell, Brendan Fraser, Austin Butler, Paul Mescal, and Bill Nighy—as well as supporting actors and actresses like Brian Tyree Henry, Stephanie Hsu, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Hong Chau. What’s more, Andrea Riseborough’s viral grassroots Oscar campaign for her performance in the indie drama To Leslie paid off with a best-lead-actress nomination, and fan favorite Everything Everywhere All at Once walked away with a whopping 11 nominations. Without further ado, find all the 2023 Oscar nominations below:
