Breast cancer awareness advocacy group ICanServe celebrates its 25th year with The Pink Room, a fundraiser auction featuring 25 renowned Filipino artists.
In 2018, Christina Dy was diagnosed with breast cancer. On the surface, it didn’t seem unlikely. She was healthy, staying active through her work as a visual artist and pole dancer, and her family had no history of the disease. But thanks to an ICanServe campaign, she detected her cancer at Stage 1 and was able to save her own life.
Years later, she is one of the 25 renowned Filipino artists who will be showcased in The Pink Room, a fundraiser that marks the 25th anniversary of breast cancer awareness advocacy group ICanServe Foundation. In a gallery curated by designer Carol Karthe, each artist will offer a unique art piece in the form of a Nike Air Force (AF1) Triple White, to be auctioned on September 14 after a two-week exhibition.
National Artis for Visual Arts Benedictor “BENCAB” Cabrera leads the roster of participating artists: Gus Albor, Arce, Max Balatbat, Plet Bolipata, Elmer Borlongan, Jinggoy Buensuceso, Carlo Calma, Katrina Cuenca, RM De Leon, Daniel dela Cruz, Monica Delgado, Tracie Anglo Dizon, Christina Dy, Emmanuel Garibay, Toym Imao, Jose Santos III, Pam Yan Santos, Gerry Tan, Carlo Tanseco, Vien Valencia, Lydia Velasco, Ronal Ventura, Melissa Yeung Yap, and MM Yu.
Like Dy, the cause is personal advocacy for the artists. “I believe in the cause that your [ICanServe] foundation is advocating,” says product designer and sculptor Daniel dela Cruz. Max Balatbat, a mixed media artist, shares that his mother is a cancer survivor, which fuels his support for cancer awareness advocacy.
Proceeds from the auction will help ICanServe fund treatments and medical procedures for breast cancer patients, launch high-impact health literacy campaigns, invest in the training of public healthcare workers on early detection, and create breast cancer control programs. Additionally, every visitor of The Pink Room may also donate to ICanServe, with every minimum donation of Php 500 counted as a single raffle entry for art shoes donated by artists Liliana Manahan and Ciane Xavier.
All unique AF1 shoes will be available for viewing at The Pink Room, which will be at The Estate Makati Lounge, Hall 3 of SMX Aura on September 1 and 2, from 10 AM to 10 PM, then at L2, The Brittany Hotel, BGC, from September 4 to 14, from 10:30 AM to 9:30 PM.
