“Instinctive Rhythms”

“I wanted the piece to embody something that felt and looked more like an object as opposed to a garment.”

Going back to basics, Prince Padilla unlocks a mode of “creative critical thinking” and experimental forms.

A Novel by Prince Padilla piece is instantly recognizable. For one, it’s likely deconstructed; a tailored garment just slightly askew. It’s usually ruched, draped, or puffed, following the body’s form. For his latest creation for Vogue, however, he “wanted the piece to embody something that felt and looked more like an object as opposed to a garment.”

Returning to “basic but considered shapes,” Prince lets the organic process of draping and silhouette-building guide his hand, and highlights what he describes as “creative critical thinking” through experimental forms. The designer spent two days creating the individual forms before taking an entire day to drape the canvas fabric around the maquette.

Crafting something around a still object as opposed to a moving body allowed Prince a much freer thought process, which he describes as a way of thinking that “opens us a lot more potential to create more interesting pieces visually for the exhibition. Craft and techniques can always be taught and nurtured, but I believe that personal process and creative vigor have more of a story to tell.”

On its second anniversary, Vogue Philippines invites homegrown and global creatives to Vogue Threads, an experience that weaves Philippine culture, creativity, and community into the world.
