“I honestly believe that our “pamana” and the stories of our ancestors are all in our hands intrinsically.”

For Vogue Threads, Gabbie Sarenas challenges the traditional terno with a unique vision.

With a brand known for integrating storytelling elements into design, Gabbie Sarenas weaves a captivating narrative that redefines the traditional terno (a traditional Filipino formal dress known for its butterfly sleeves) in “Sabado (Saturday.)” By utilizing piña silk, piña shifu, silk linen, and cañamazo, (an open-weave fabric used for embroidery or tapestry work) Sarenas pays homage to the country’s rich textile heritage while masterfully integrating the label’s signature sampaguita and scallop motifs, breathing new life into a beloved classic.

She describes her design process as an exploration of craft and form. In “Sabado,” the terno top is being held only by the waist, presenting a fresh perspective. “It’s looking at (the terno) from a different angle, literally,” Sarenas notes. The ensemble showcases intricate hand embroidery, embodying the brand’s Filipino ethos of “malasakit sa detalye. (solicitude in the details.)”
