After a comparatively muted edition last year due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes, Venice Film Festival is set to return with a bang, with the likes of Angelina Jolie, Cate Blanchett, Lady Gaga and Taylor Russell all set to be in attendance.

Over on the red carpet, expect to see plenty of vintage looks, as the trend for all things archival shows no sign of letting up. In 2023, Amal Clooney turned heads at the DVF Awards in Venice in a blush-pink dress from John Galliano’s autumn/winter 2000 collection for Christian Dior, sourced from Tab Vintage.

Meanwhile, 2022 was a vintage year at Venice Film Festival, with a whole host of stars, including Penélope Cruz, Tessa Thompson and Isabelle Huppert, opting to wear pieces from the fashion archives. Of course, vintage on the red carpet isn’t a completely new thing. Back in 2018, Lady Gaga wore a white Azzedine Alaïa dress for the Venice premiere of A Star is Born, while Irina Shayk sported a dazzling Versace number from spring/summer 1996 at the same event.

Ahead of this year’s Venice Film Festival, take a look back at the best vintage looks to have graced the Lido to date.
