Jingdezhen Keeps a Millennium of Porcelain Craft Alive

Photographed by Haoyu Jin for the December 2025/January 2026 Issue of Vogue Philippines

In Jingdezhen, the Porcelain Capital of China, the city’s history of ceramic production spans more than 1,700 years.

Jingdezhen sits on the banks of the Chang River and has been a center of porcelain production for more than a millennium. In ancient times, it was known as Changnan, with clay, firewood, and minerals brought down from nearby mountains to sustain its industry. After the fall of the Ming dynasty and the rise of industrial production in Europe, output slowed, though the city’s workshops continued operating. Today, a new generation of artisans maintains the tradition, producing ceramics for both domestic use and the global market.
