Whether she’s approaching style or art, Trickie Lopa searches for the same quality: a unique perspective.
As the Manila Art Blogger, Trickie Lopa chronicled the early years of the city’s thriving art scene, getting to know each of the artists and the motivation behind their work. This process honed her taste and appreciation for contemporary Philippine art. In 2013, she co-founded Art Fair Philippines, now the country’s premier platform for exhibiting and selling art.
Lopa’s personal style reflects the creative realm she navigates as an art and fashion events organizer, where you will likely spot her in some deconstructed denim outfit from Carl Jan Cruz or Joseph Bagasao, designers whom she feels “get her.” She describes her aesthetic as “casual with a twist,” but “edgy cool girl” or “artfully at ease” are equally apt. “I’m constantly around people who don’t have limitations to expressing themselves,” she says. “This has allowed me to feel the same confidence about bringing out my personal style.”
Lopa’s sartorial sense was triggered at 13 years old when she was given a copy of the September issue of Seventeen magazine. “Something clicked in my head. I just knew how I would put together the clothes on feature.” Her approach to fashion has parallels in her method for acquiring art, gravitating toward strong, sculptural pieces that express a unique perspective. “You only have to please yourself,” she advises, asserting that clothes should reflect, not define, one’s identity. In other words: “I wear the clothes. They don’t wear me.”
