Gucci has secured the prime slot of opening Milan Fashion Week with its first unified menswear and womenswear show.
After giving the Florentine brand a slick burgundy rebrand, it was announced a few weeks ago that Sabato De Sarno has departed after two years as creative director. “I would like to express my deep gratitude to Sabato for his passion and dedication to Gucci,” said CEO Stefano Cantino in a statement about the news. “I sincerely appreciate how he honored Gucci’s craftsmanship and heritage with such commitment.”
On Instagram, De Sarno gave his team a gesture of immense respect with a caption: “Any important project relies on the passion, the intelligence, and [the] heart of extraordinary people. To them, I say: always look out for your joy. It is the true measure of whether you are true to yourself, whatever the opportunity, whatever the challenge. A thank you would not be enough maybe. But today my joy is for you.”
After Alessandro Michele left Gucci in 2022, there was a worldwide search for his successor. De Sarno was the one to paint Gucci in a shade of “Ancora Rosso” red, and his debut collection was a Swinging Sixties revival with a Milanese twist, showing patent leather mini skirts, charcoal coats, and platformed loafers on his runway. Kering deputy CEO Francesca Bellettini thanked De Sarno for his work while looking to the future. “I am proud of the work that has been done to further strengthen Gucci’s fundamentals,” he said in a statement. “Stefano and the artistic direction will continue to build on this and to guide Gucci towards renewed fashion leadership and sustainable growth.”
While we wait for the next designer to take Gucci into the mainstream, the baton has been passed to the in-house design team for this season’s Milan show. Presenting its first unified show of menswear and womenswear, the house will rely on its lasting design codes for this chapter in its narrative. Gucci is slowly transitioning into the new next era, reclaiming its 90s interlocking logo and Italian Green (or Bangladesh Green, according to 1stDibs) for the next generation.
The Gucci Fall/Winter 2025 show will go live on February 25 at 10 PM (Philippine Standard Time) or 3 PM (CET). Watch the live stream below, or at this link.
