In Paris, Pharrell Williams takes center stage, opening fashion week with his debut collection for Louis Vuitton.
The multihyphenate was announced as the brand’s newly appointed men’s creative director in February, and since then, he’s already made headlines with his first campaign: coffee in hand, a pregnant Rihanna makes her way down a busy street, carrying four Louis Vuitton Speedy bags in vibrant hues. She wears a leather trench emblazoned with a playfully pixelated version of the brand’s signature Damier pattern.
As a woman sits as the face of a Louis Vuitton menswear campaign, it is only telling of what Williams has in store at the helm of the brand. In his new role, he succeeds designer Virgil Abloh, who was known for his convention-defying collections at the intersection of culture and fashion.
Already a pioneer in music, fashion, and the arts, Williams might just be the one to fill those shoes. Abloh himself has said, “What I would be more impressed by is if the next candidate for a house, the next head designer, has this multidisciplinary background—comes from not a fashion school, and thinks in a different dimension. Let him get a shot.”
