Drawn to Silk: 9 Artists Reinterpret Gucci’s Heritage

Courtesy of Gucci

Nine visionary artists reinterpret Gucci’s heritage through vibrant silk narratives.

Gucci’s silk legacy can be traced back to 1966, to the day Grace Kelly, the American actress and later Princess of Monaco, walked into their boutique in Milan. The founder’s son Rodolfo Gucci happened to be there, and, wanting to give Kelly a gift, he commissioned Italian artist and illustrator Vittorio Accornero de Testa to create a special artwork to be printed on a scarf.

Consisting of nine floral bunches, Accornero’s Flora pattern is just one of the Italian house’s most distinct themes to date, alongside the GG Monogram, Horsebit, nautical, and fauna motifs. These five are highlighted in Gucci’s new project, The Art of Silk.

The collaboration brings together nine artists to reimagine the five themes rooted in Gucci’s storied archive. Reinterpreting the house’s heritage is a diverse collective of artists, ranging from conceptual pioneers like Robert Barry to contemporary illustrator and animator Inji Seo.

The resulting collection transforms silk into a dynamic canvas where decades-old craftsmanship meets contemporary art, threading Gucci’s legacy into the narrative of our times. Each scarf reflects a convergence of artistry and heritage; a modern celebration of the house’s ongoing creative evolution.
