Whether it’s about body odor, hyperpigmentation, or texture, here are some tips on how you can improve your underarm skincare.
Like any other part of the body, our underarms need to be taken care of. Underarm skincare goes beyond preventing body odor; it’s also about maintaining skin health, preventing irritation, and ensuring confidence in your daily activities.
The underarms are a naturally moist area, making them a breeding ground for bacteria that cause odor. Underarm skin is also delicate and more sensitive than other areas of the body. Because of this, it can easily react to shaving, waxing, or harsh chemicals. With proper care, you can help prevent irritation, rashes, and long-term damage.
Below, Dr. Pat Nicolas, a board-certified dermatologist specializing in Aesthetic and Regenerative Medicine, shares her expert tips for better underarm skincare.
Understand the causes of body odor
Body odor is often linked to two common concerns: hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin) and keratosis pilaris, also known as “chicken skin.” Both conditions can affect appearance and self-confidence, but they are manageable with the right routine.
Choose gentle deodorants
If you are prone to mild rashes, consider deodorants formulated with safer alternatives such as sodium bicarbonate, magnesium hydroxide, or natural oils. Some products also contain aluminum compounds, which help control sweat. Pairing deodorant use with regular hair removal supports overall hygiene.
For individuals with highly sensitive skin, hypoallergenic deodorants are available. In some cases, dermatologists may also recommend steroid creams to help soothe irritation and restore comfort.
Avoid harsh ingredients
Deodorants that contain pure aluminum or parabens can irritate the underarm area. These ingredients may worsen sensitivity and lead to long-term issues. Opting for gentler formulas reduces irritation and helps maintain healthy skin.
Identify the causes of hyperpigmentation
Darkening of the underarms is commonly caused by plucking, shaving, waxing, or using strong acidic deodorants. To minimize this, dermatologists often recommend alternatives such as laser treatments or TCA peels, which can improve skin tone and reduce discoloration.
Consider laser hair removal
Frequent shaving and waxing can trigger hyperpigmentation, irritation, and ingrown hairs. These hair removal methods, while convenient, often damage the skin barrier and worsen sensitivity. Laser hair removal is highly recommended as a long-term solution. It not only slows hair regrowth but also helps reduce chicken skin and underarm darkening. This option addresses multiple concerns at once, offering smoother and healthier skin.
Know the difference: deodorant vs. antiperspirant
Deodorants are designed to mask or prevent odor, while antiperspirants focus on reducing sweat production. Understanding this distinction allows you to choose the right product depending on your needs.
For those who struggle with profuse underarm sweating, it’s important to first evaluate lifestyle habits or possible medical conditions that may contribute. If sweating becomes uncontrollable, treatments such as botulinum toxin (Botox) can provide relief.
